Disassembling a Cables Unlimited USB-WR2000 Wireless USB Adapter
Here is a series of pictures illustrating the insides of the USB-WR2000 wireless usb adapters.
I took some pictures while disassembling the adapters and I dedicate this post to fotonut who is interested in learning more about any external antenna attachment options. His question is in the comments on one of my other posts about how to create a wireless usb battery grip.
I appreciate any feedback and I am happy to answer fotonut’s questions with a post.
Here is the USB-WR2000 client adapter, this is the one you plug into the powered dock.
Using a small screwdriver or other prying device try to come in at an angle from the side with the LED activity window side up. The reason for this is the PCB is not exposed or under any pressure from prying if you enter from this side of the adapter.
Illustrating that the screwdriver doesn’t contact the PCB from this side of the adapter. Also what you see here is some insulating material that reminds me of a flat piece of putty. Also you see the copper antenna toward the top of the PCB.
Here is a closer look with the plastic covers removed.
Here is a look at the bottom of the adapter, the opposite side from where I pried it open. If you see on this side the PCB is exposed and you run more of a risk of damaging something if you pry from this side.
Here is a view with the insulation moved away.
Here is another view of the other side without the insulation.
The two plastic pieces come apart rather easily and as you see they fit back together pretty cleanly. I have re-assembled an adapter set after prying them apart by just dabbing some crazy glue in the corners and everything was fine again.
Fotonut, this one’s for you. Here you see the antenna. It is small and if you choose the right attachment method I think you can add a larger antenna to the copper. I haven’t tried it. Yet.
Here you see the pins for the USB. I imagine you can remove and attach your own custom header.
Here is the backside where you can remove the male USB.
Thanks for the views and I hope these pictures will be of help to anyone considering a hack or mod that incorporates the Cables Unlimited USB-WR2000 Wireless USB Adapter set.
